Welcome to Leaning Post

A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it.

Open This Civic Long Weekend Friday – Monday 10am to 6pm

Gamay and Syrah Release

We are extremely excited to announce the release of our two newest wines this weekend

Come and join us and try our newest releases!

2013 Gamay:  $25 retail ($21.11 Licencee)

The 2013 Gamay is from Wismer Vineyards, near the same vineyard that grew our 2010 Merlot. It is an exciting style of Gamay reminiscent of Cru Beaujolais (particularly Fleurie) showing a big nose of wild flowers and strawberry, with earthy herbal and meat flavours, followed by chaulky minerality on the palate. Like the long lost cousin that connects Pinot and Syrah, it provides firm and focused tannins, yet delicacy. It has all of the classic things we love about Gamay; truly complex, terroir-driven wine!

2012 Syrah – Keczan Vineyard:  $42 (Licencee $35.46)

This Syrah has been perhaps the craziest example of our commitment to this winemaking project. First, Ilya had to find buyers for a majority of the Kezcans other grapes, just to secure the seven rows that went into this wine. Then, it was pressed on the day our second son was born. Nadia drove herself to the hospital, because we were pressing the Syrah, and on the way to the hospital got a speeding ticket!

That commitment has lead to what we think is one of our best wines to date! Loads of white pepper, anise and lavender pull you in on the nose, with mounds of mulberry, earth, bacon and smoked meat goodness throughout. Exceptional balance of fine but firm tannins and cool climate acidity lead to a phenomenally long finish. Making this sort of wine is why we got in to the wine business in the first place!

To try both of these fantastic wines, come and join us at the barn at:

1491 Highway 8, Stoney Creek, ON, L8E 5K9

Or phone us to reserve your case or for shipping orders by calling 905-643-9795

Directions to the Barn:

From Toronto take QEW Niagara to Fifty Rd. exit. Take Fifty Rd. south (away from the Lake) to Highway 8. Turn Left (east) onto Highway 8 and we are at 1491 Highway 8.

From Niagara take QEW Toronto to Fifty Rd. exit. Take Fifty Rd. south (away from the Lake) to Highway 8. Turn Left (east) onto Highway 8 and we are at 1491 Highway 8.

We look forward to seeing all of you!

Cheers,

Ilya and Nadia Senchuk

Leaning Post Wines is in the new Vines Magazine (15th Anniversary Edition)

Title: Learning Curve
Any day now, Ilya and Nadia Senchuk will welcome the first customers to their boutique winery in Winona, Ont. The two, who met in their native Winnipeg, Manitoba, have pictured the moment since late night talks as newlyweds saw them dream up Leaning Post, a project that as evolved from being a so-called virtual label to a bricks-and-mortar winery housed in a refurbished barn beside the family home. That vision has guided them through the protracted planning process and helped them keep calm through bureaucratic tie-ups and other interruptions. “Expect delays and a timeline beyond what you think is reasonable,” the couple told VINES, when asked to share insights about starting a winery in Canada. “The average start-up time for a winery in Canada is seven years. Try explaining that to your friends, family, neighbours and bankers.” The couple’s commitment has seen them embrace a DIY philosophy as much as possible to save money and to maintain control of their destiny. Focus is key, especially for a small operation, they insist. Five years and two children since informal chats ignited their passion to start a winery, the Senchuk family is ready to welcome savvy wine lovers to their home to share a taste of their dreams in the form of distinctive Pinot, Chardonnay, Riesling and Syrah from single vineyard sites in Niagara. leaningpostwines.com

Toronto Life Riesling Article

Found this response to a Toronto Life article about Rieslings

I tried the Niagara Riesling Flight at Crush Wine Bar the other day (Leaning Post, Hidden Bench & Charles Baker) what a great way to “crush” some lingering stereotypes about the quality of Ontario Wines!

Rieslings are my favorite choice for fusion cuisine and multicultural spices so prevalent in Toronto. Leaning Post (2009) in particular had the peachy, quince flavors I love and a wicked sharp acidity (most definitely age-worthy).

Taste This…Virtual Perfection

p>Excepts from Taste This… Virtual perfection

Leaning Post Winery Pinot Noir 2009 ($38)
A virtual winery means that the winemaker isn’t tied to his or her estate’s vineyards, which means they can search an entire region for the fruit that suits them best. Ilya Senchuk of Leaning Post Winery told me that it took him a year to find the block of vines that he wanted to work with to create this lovely Pinot Noir. It has a classic Burgundian nose of sour cherry and old leather, following through to a gamey, thyme-infused palate with nuanced complexity and lots of capacity to age. Outstanding.

Leaning Post Winery Riesling 2009 ($25)
This stunning Riesling greets you with a fragrant nose of orange blossoms and rosehip. The delicate bouquet plunges into a chewy palate of rich tangerine and mineral notes. A bracing seam of controlled acidity runs from the initial attack to the lingering finish. This wine already has a lot of personality, but 5 to 10 years will only add more complexity to its vibrant character.
