Welcome to Leaning Post
A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it.
Leaning Post Wines will be open Friday – Monday 10:30 to 5:30 this Family Day long weekend.
Remember, if you are running late just call and let us know you are coming. We would be pleased to stay open for you. Never miss us due to our hours of operation!

Hello all Chardonnay lovers! We will be having a special tasting of our Chardonnay this weekend to celebrate the International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration.
Friday through Sunday (July 18 – 20) we will have a selection of cheeses in the tasting room (that pair perfectly with Chardonnay) We will be tasting through the 2012 Oaked Chardonnay (Ilya thinks this is the best Chardonnay he has ever made!) and the Barrel Fermented Chardonnay that we call the Fifty. We will also do barrel samples for visitors of the 2013 Oaked Chardonnay. Its always fun to taste wines in process.
Looking forward to seeing many familiar faces this weekend at the tasting room. Tasting Room Open 10-6 Friday and Sunday 10-5 Saturday (got to get pretty for the Gala)
Ilya and I will also be at the Gala celebration for the I 4 C this Saturday evening.

Title: Learning Curve
Any day now, Ilya and Nadia Senchuk will welcome the first customers to their boutique winery in Winona, Ont. The two, who met in their native Winnipeg, Manitoba, have pictured the moment since late night talks as newlyweds saw them dream up Leaning Post, a project that as evolved from being a so-called virtual label to a bricks-and-mortar winery housed in a refurbished barn beside the family home. That vision has guided them through the protracted planning process and helped them keep calm through bureaucratic tie-ups and other interruptions. “Expect delays and a timeline beyond what you think is reasonable,” the couple told VINES, when asked to share insights about starting a winery in Canada. “The average start-up time for a winery in Canada is seven years. Try explaining that to your friends, family, neighbours and bankers.” The couple’s commitment has seen them embrace a DIY philosophy as much as possible to save money and to maintain control of their destiny. Focus is key, especially for a small operation, they insist. Five years and two children since informal chats ignited their passion to start a winery, the Senchuk family is ready to welcome savvy wine lovers to their home to share a taste of their dreams in the form of distinctive Pinot, Chardonnay, Riesling and Syrah from single vineyard sites in Niagara. leaningpostwines.com

Found this response to a Toronto Life article about Rieslings
I tried the Niagara Riesling Flight at Crush Wine Bar the other day (Leaning Post, Hidden Bench & Charles Baker) what a great way to “crush” some lingering stereotypes about the quality of Ontario Wines!
Rieslings are my favorite choice for fusion cuisine and multicultural spices so prevalent in Toronto. Leaning Post (2009) in particular had the peachy, quince flavors I love and a wicked sharp acidity (most definitely age-worthy).

p>Excepts from Taste This… Virtual perfection
Leaning Post Winery Pinot Noir 2009 ($38)
A virtual winery means that the winemaker isn’t tied to his or her estate’s vineyards, which means they can search an entire region for the fruit that suits them best. Ilya Senchuk of Leaning Post Winery told me that it took him a year to find the block of vines that he wanted to work with to create this lovely Pinot Noir. It has a classic Burgundian nose of sour cherry and old leather, following through to a gamey, thyme-infused palate with nuanced complexity and lots of capacity to age. Outstanding.
Leaning Post Winery Riesling 2009 ($25)
This stunning Riesling greets you with a fragrant nose of orange blossoms and rosehip. The delicate bouquet plunges into a chewy palate of rich tangerine and mineral notes. A bracing seam of controlled acidity runs from the initial attack to the lingering finish. This wine already has a lot of personality, but 5 to 10 years will only add more complexity to its vibrant character.
